Trip to MoMA PS1/Printed Matter Inc. Art Book Fair

Last Friday, we went on a day trip to MoMA PS1 to check out the annual NY Art Book Fair organized by a local zine and art book heaven, Printed Matter, Inc. I was excited to see the NY fair, as I had gone to the LA Art Book Fair at MOCA last February, and had heard from exhibitors there how packed NY was. A piece of advice I had gotten was “to not pack a jacket, it gets hot in there…”

I spent a long time on floor 2, which featured much of the photography zines and books. My favorite vendor was AKAAKA, an art book publishing company from Japan. They had some stunning publications of Japanese artists, such as KOHEI NAWA. Other favorites were Ooga Booga, a LA shop of independent artist books, and MOSSLESS a NY independent handmade photo book publisher.

During the fair there was also live music, performances, lectures and workshops; which really added to the overall DIY, community-building atmosphere. I really enjoyed seeing the diversity of international, local vendors as well as the amount of creative minds out there determined to keep print art alive. - Cindy Yeh, Digital Learning 12-Month Intern
